Super Bowl XLIII = Pro-Life?

We’re almost a week away from one of the biggest sports events in America. Parties are being planned, down to football-shaped snacks. TVs are being bought just to have bigger, better screens. Millions are waiting in anticipation to see who the winner of the Super Bowl XLIII will be. Though I can’t quite get enthralled by the game, as I’m sure most ladies can relate, I do love any excuse to throw a party and eat some delicious “football” food. There is one thing though that men, women, and children alike can enjoy during the game: Commercials!

Companies have been working tirelessly all year, waiting for the climax of Super Bowl commercials. Everyone is waiting to see what will be the most interesting, funny, or shocking commercial of the Super Bowl. There’s always at least one memorable or controversial commercial. This year, one commercial is already getting quite a buzz on the internet, and it hasn’t even aired yet.

Focus on the Family is featuring Tim Tebow, ex-quarterback for the Florida Gators, and his mom in a 30-second ad called “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life,” during CBS’ coverage of this year’s Super Bowl. It will tell the story of how Mrs. Tebow fell ill while pregnant with Tim, her fifth son, during a mission’s trip in the Philippines. She disregarded her doctor’s advice to abort the baby and gave birth to a future follower of Christ and Heisman Trophy winner.

Many women’s groups, such as Women’s Media Center, National Organization for Women (NOW), and Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), are outraged, stating that this ad is completely inappropriate for Super Bowl Sunday. Jehmu Greene, president of the Women’s Media Center in New York says, “An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year – an event designed to bring Americans together. It uses one family’s story to dictate morality to the American public, and encourages young women to disregard medical advice, putting their lives at risk.”

After going on Women’s Media Center and reading more of their outcries, I was deeply saddened. Such groups often shout about having the right to choose and their freedom of speech but then when something goes against their beliefs; they cry “Intolerance, Sexism, Racism, etc. etc!” Doesn’t being pro-choice mean you have more than one option to CHOOSE from? Seems as though they are actually pro-abortion, rather than pro-choice.

When I told one of my friends about this controversy she said to me “What? Are they mad that he’s alive?” Unfortunately, it almost seems as though they are. It’s hard to imagine that someone could be mad at a commercial that celebrates a baby surviving a possible death. Honestly, I would have thought they would be refreshed by an commercial that replaces the usual Super Bowl genre that demoralizes women by making crude jokes and focusing on scantily clad women.

But in fact, they are outraged because Mrs. Tebow chose to follow God and was blessed. A woman chose to go against the “experts” and follow her convictions. She gave birth to her baby and now there is one more outstanding follower of Christ in the world. This ad celebrates a choice that ended in LIFE. It is a SUCCESS story, showing women out there that there are other choices besides abortion.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List, made a good point in saying that “Women can be trusted with information and they certainly don’t need to be protected from the idea that if they have a crisis pregnancy that they can choose life. What are they protecting people from?” she asked. “It is just so counter to the whole mission which is to provide women choices. This is just the one choice they can’t abide.”

They can’t abide with it because they are still living in a world of darkness. They don’t know Christ as their personal Savior so their world is controlled by the Great Deceiver, Satan. He is out to make everyone live for their own desires, no matter the consequences. Satan even deceived the Israelites into following the pagan god, Molech (2 Kgs. 16:3, 21:6, 23:10; Jer. 32:35; 2 Chr. 28:3). The Ammonites sacrificed their babies to Molech by throwing them in the fire. This was their offering to him, in hopes of being blessed with riches and a successful life. Their selfish desires ended up in them killing thousands of innocent babies. Does this sound very unfamiliar from today?

How did God respond to this practice?

The LORD said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites: Any Israelite or any alien living in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech must be put to death…. I myself will set my face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given one of his children to Molech, to make my sanctuary unclean and to profane my holy name. And if the people of the land do at all close their eyes to that man when he gives one of his children to Molech, and do not put him to death, then I will set my face against that man and against his clan and will cut them off from among their people, him and all who follow him in whoring after Molech. ~Leviticus 20:1-5

There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: hands that shed innocent blood. ~ Prov. 6:16-17

These women’s advocacy groups are NOT the deciders of truth and fairness. God is the only one who decides what’s right and wrong. The Almighty Creator of this world has laid down His truths in Scripture so we can know how to honor him with our lives. God gives us only ONE choice when it comes to the matter of life. You shall not murder. ~ Ex. 20:13

He designed you and me before we took one cry outside the womb:

You knit me in my mother’s womb . . . nor was my frame unknown to you when I was made in secret. ~Psalm 139:13, 15

Truly children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward” ~Ps. 127:3

We are all a part of His plan and our lives are precious to Him. So, let’s praise God for a life that was saved and pray that more women, like Mrs. Tebow, will step up for what’s right.
