In the past few weeks, nothing has taken over the news headlines like the legalization of same-sex marriage. Celebrities are tweeting their pics endorsing the NOH8 campaign, the military has abolished the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, same-sex couples are getting married for the first time, and churches are even accepting homosexuals into clergy positions. Even 53% of Americans think same-sex marriages should be legalized and given the same rights as traditional marriages. There is also an increase in hostility to those who disagree.
It’s becoming more and more difficult to be a Christ-follower who believes that marriage is solely between a man and a woman – you’re called a bigot, intolerant, hateful, and other names I wouldn’t care to mention. But having beliefs contrary to culture is exactly what Christ called His people to do. When God established His plan for marriage He knew we would be hated, called names, and ostracized. He made marriage to be between a man and woman for a purpose and He gave those reasons from the very start!
Male AND Female: For Companionship
So God created man in his own image,in the image of God he created him;male and female he created them… Gen. 1:17
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Gen. 2:24
God first made man then He saw that man needed a companion so He made woman. God didn’t make another male to give Adam the option to see which he was more compatible with. God made Eve for Adam and Adam for Eve. In all of Scripture, God never chose to unite two men or two women together in marriage. He never blessed it, never advocated it, and never used it as a positive example. He did, however, ALWAYS set forward marriages between a man and woman as part of His design for creation, for ALL time.
God has always referred to homosexuality as unnatural (Rom.1:26-27; Jude 1:7) and an abomination (read Gabby’s Article for more information on this issue) to Him and God does not change His mind (Lev.18:22; 20:13). Same-sex marriages go against His design, His plan, and His will for mankind. He’s not being hateful, mean, or unloving by establishing marriage this way. He’s the perfect Creator and this is the way He chooses to glorify Himself in us, so we, as His creation, should trust in His faithfulness and His divine wisdom that He knows better than us in all matters, including marriage. Man and woman were made to live together in marriage, be companions to each other, and to create life together.
Male AND Female: For Procreation
As I was reading through the Flood narrative I was struck at how many times God repeats “male and female” over and over again. Between Genesis 6:19 and 7:16, “male and female” is used 4 times to refer to the types of animals that Noah was to keep on the ark. The reason was so that they could “keep their offspring alive on the face of all the earth.” (Gen. 7:3)
One of God’s first commands to Adam and Eve, along with all the creatures on the earth, was to “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.”(Gen.1:21-23,28) He even repeats these same commands to Noah, his sons, their wives, and the “male and female” animals that were on the ark. (Gen.8:15-17; 9:1,7) He commanded all the male/female pairs, both human and animal, to procreate. Male and females pairs were kept alive so that life could continue – without these couplings life would cease to exist.
God designed marriage for procreation and in a way that can only be accomplished through a man and a woman being joined together. This is the way God established it from the beginning. As a friend once told me, “There would be no Cain and Abel without Adam AND Eve.” The furtherance of nature and all mankind cannot occur without a man AND a woman. Same-sex couples may be able to adopt or use donors but a man and a woman must still be used for procreation because that’s the way God designed it, that’s the way He designed nature. It’s impossible apart from His plan. He designed marriage to be between a man and a woman and He designed procreation to only occur between a man and a woman. Anything beyond this plan goes against God’s plan and ceases to be for our betterment.
Male AND Female: For the Gospel
I am not writing this so that you dislike anyone who is involved in a same-sex relationship, anyone that struggles with same-sex attraction or even anyone that believes that same-sex relationships should be accepted by all. I am writing this so that we, as God’s children, know His intended plan for marriage and so that we will stand strong in His Word even when the majority of society hates us for it.
We should love everyone and treat them as Christ would, but that doesn’t mean that we endorse the sin in their lives. We must understand though that standing for God’s commands means we will be disliked, we will be hated because we are not of the world, otherwise they would love us (Lk.21:17; Jn. 15:19).
God loves all His creation, no matter their race, age, or sin. Christ showed His love by dying for the whole world to save us from our depravity (Rom.5:8). He died for my struggle with pride. He died for those who struggle with lying, cheating, sexual immorality, and hurtful words. He died for those who struggle with same-sex attraction and those who are in same-sex relationships. He died for all sins so that if we believe in Him we can be delivered from that lifestyle of sin, have His righteousness, and live with Him forever (Jn. 3:16-17; 1 Pet.2:24). He died because He loves everyone but that doesn’t mean He can or will tolerate any of our sin, nor should He.
Those who don’t believe in Christ and turn from their life of sin, whether it’s lying, sexual immorality, or homosexuality, will not see the eternal life and deliverance Christ offers (Jn. 3:36). They will not have right standing in God’s eyes and will be rejected (2 Thess. 2:12; 1 Pet.2:6-8). That is why we, as men and women of God, must love those who don’t know Christ and share the truths of God’s Word with them. We must exemplify the Gospel in our daily lives, holding fast to the words of God in Scripture. They are our life, they are our standards and we must submit ourselves to their authority in our lives. No matter what the world says, no matter the persecution, stay true to God’s Word and show the world the hope that is in Christ (1 Cor.15:19)!
As Dr. Mohler puts it so well in his article., “Reparative Therapy, Homosexuality, and the Gospel of Christ,”
“The normalization of homosexuality simply cannot be accepted by anyone committed to biblical Christianity. To deny that sin is sin is to deny our need for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Christians cannot accept any teaching that minimizes sin, for it is the knowledge of our sin that points us to our need for atonement, salvation, and the forgiveness of that sin through the cross of Jesus Christ.”
